Salome Agbaroji serves as the 2023 National Youth Poet Laureate. She is a Nigerian-American poet that has written for as well as performed spoken word poetry for events such as the Golden Globes Pre-Show, NFL Rams Halftime Show, served as an Opening Act on Rupi Kaur's World Tour. She has performed for the likes of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Cullors, Mrs. Tina Lawson, and many more. Salome was a YoungArts winner in Spoken Word and has been honored by the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards, among many others. She has been published in NPR's KCRW, Noema Magazine, the Harvard Technology Review, among others. Her focuses outside of poetry are civic engagement and advocacy about issues such as racism towards minority communities, immigrant stories, injustices in the international community, and more.
A Gahr High School graduate, Salome Agbaroji was selected as Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate in 2022 where her poems about home, family, and a mission to combat illiteracy elevated her voice, later winning the 2023 Youth Poet Laureate Western Regional Ambassador. Salome, has a clear civic and literary vision for her role as National Youth Poet Laureate. In her winning application she wrote, “my primary goal would be tackling illiteracy by promoting equity and accessibility within our educational systems.” Her commitment to these goals are personal and familial as well as academic. She plans to continue this national initiative while tackling being a freshman at Harvard University during fall 2023.
